Cherries, which always make me think of my grandma, as she loves them, made their debut at the market last weekend. She eats them as is, which we have mainly been doing as well. They’re a lot of work to cook or bake with, what with all the pitting, but could be worth it for the right recipe. In the meantime, we’ll pop ‘em in and spit out the pit, or cut a few up along with fresh market strawberries to top homemade chia seed pudding with.

I usually go to the Farmers’ Market or grocery store with a shopping list in hand, otherwise I’m sure to forget something. If it’s Sunday, this list is derived from the meals I’ve planned out for the week. A portion of Sunday evening is usually spent in the kitchen making lunches or prepping ingredients for dinners; it’s a relaxing way to wrap up the weekend and makes for a smoother week ahead.

The Farmers' Markets were good to us last weekend. We visited two different markets, one that used to be our regular — Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket — and is the largest in Brooklyn, only open on Saturdays, and our new regular — Carroll Gardens Greenmarket — which is a bit smaller and open on Sundays. Both had seasonal products we took well advantage of.

This past weekend was the first time we spotted asparagus at our local Farmers' Market and we were thrilled! We added two good looking bunches to our haul, already imagining how we would prepare them: for breakfast, with fried eggs, parmesan cheese, and lemon zest. Prem’s preparation is simple and perfect. The combination of the fresh flavors tastes like spring in your mouth.
We also picked up a few beautiful looking tomatoes with grand plans to eat them with burrata. While that hasn’t happened yet, we have tossed the fresh tomatoes in an avocado and roasted eggplant salad with red onion, cilantro and goat cheese, and Prem’s parents, who are visiting from India, incorporated them into poha for breakfast. Poha is a flattened rice dish cooked with Indian spices such as mustard seeds and curry leaves, nuts and raisins, chili and tomatoes, and garnished with cilantro.
